GFA’s Student Advisory Board in Third Year
GFA Federal Credit Unions Student Advisory Board convened and using parliamentary procedure officer candidates were nominated and voted by the Student Advisory Board to serve for the third year.

The credit union and Gardner High School partnership provides ten students real world experience in learning about how a local financial institution runs and corporate governance, all while developing valuable financial literacy skills. GFA Student Advisory Board members include: Mark Carpentier, Chair; Jackie Nicholson, Vice-Chair; Rebecca Dorval, Treasurer; Skyla Johnson, Secretary; Kendra Keenan, Allison Cheney, Kyle Weidler, David Belitsky, Ben Caron, Troy Yacyshyn, and Christoph Knoll.

“We appreciate the commitment of these students and the opportunity to collaborate with Gardner Public Schools to provide financial literacy education to young adults as they approach their first financial needs,” said Tina M. Sbrega, GFA President & CEO. “The experience they gain in learning how a business operates and a board functions provides valuable real life experiences these students will use in their careers and in serving their communities,” she added.

The GFA Federal Credit Union management team meets with the board to provide education on a variety of relevant financial topics including: budgeting, what is a credit score, and guidance of banking. The students then help determine best ways to educate their peers in the school system.

“Financial literacy is a critical skill, and even more so in this economy. This partnership allows us to integrate real-life financial experiences to students in the classroom and provide lifelong lessons to our students,” said Mark Pellegrino, Principal of Gardner High School.

Since its 1938 founding, the financial well-being of members remains GFA’s top priority, as the institution continues to serve its mission by sharing profits with members in lower loan rates, no fee rewards checking accounts, and providing individualized investment services and competitive priced insurance for members.

As the well-known song goes, It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!
GFA Federal Credit Union has decided the best way to ensure this special time of year is to resurrect the People Helping People program.

Based on the international credit union philosophy of people helping people and as part of the 75th anniversary celebration employees were given cash and a set of People Helping People cards. Employees use these resources to provide random acts of kindness for people in the communities GFA serves. With each act, a People Helping People helping card is delivered. The card asks the recipient to pay it forward as a random act of kindness. The Credit Union also plans to include members of the Gardner High School Student Advisory Board in the program.

“GFA’s success is because of the trust and loyalty of our members. We want to extend that loyalty to helping make a difference in our communities. The anniversary celebration was the perfect time to give back,” said Tina M. Sbrega, GFA President & CEO.

The Credit Union has invested more than $4,000 for these deeds to help reach more than 1000 transactions of People Helping People.  As part of the program, GFA is asking people to share their story via email to peoplehelpingpeople@gfafcu.com noting either what they did to pay it forward or the nice deed they received. While respecting confidentiality, the Credit Union hopes to share some happy news stories this time of the year. In addition to giving away money, and performing random acts of kindness, GFA will donate one item to select local food pantries for each email received.

Since its 1938 founding, GFA Federal Credit Union has grown from serving Members out of the living room of Linus and Valida Allain to a full service community financial institution. There are presently nine locations in Central Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire including: Ashburnham, Gardner, Hubbardston, Leominster, Peterborough, Rindge, Rutland and Winchendon. Annually GFA Federal Credit Union donates their time and talent to more than 68 community organizations and contributes on average $60,000 to a variety of causes. For more information, call 978-632-2542.
