GFA's 7th & 8th Grade Essay Contest

GFA has partnered with the Cooperative Credit Union Association, Inc. to announce the 2018 Student Essay Contest.  Eight winners will be chosen: a first prize winner and seven finalists.

This year's theme is...

Whether it’s grammar, math, science, or social studies, students are taught many different topics in schools today, but there’s one glaring gap — financial education. Many students graduate high school not understanding about the basics of loans, savings, credit, and other core financial issues. Shouldn’t Financial Literacy be taught in schools? Please explain why you thinkschools should add financial literacy as a core curriculum in our school systems and what benefits it would have for society?

Please complete the forms and submit them to any GFA branch by Monday, February 19, 2018.

College Scholarship

The Cooperative Credit Union Association will be awarding six $1,500 college scholarships this year to high school students who will be enrolled in or accepted to a college or university undergraduate program for the 2018-2019 school year. Students who are a member of GFA Federal Credit Union or whose parent(s) or guardian are a member are eligible. 

To apply:

  1. Eligibility is limited to high school seniors who will be enrolled in an undergraduate college degree program during the 2018-2019 academic year.
  2. Applicant or parent/guardian must be a member of the sponsoring credit union.
  3. The credit union must be a member in good standing with the Massachusetts Credit Union Association, Inc.
  4. Each applicant must complete a current Association scholarship application form and submit it with the other required material to the sponsoring credit union.
  5. Each credit union will select its top 3 applications and forward them to their chapter president. (A sheet showing the evaluation criteria and their relative weights is attached.) They must be accompanied by a cover letter from the sponsoring credit union CEO verifying that each applicant and/or parent/guardian is a credit union member.
